Laser Therapy

In mild cases of adult periodontitis or gingivitis Dr. Ross may utilize a laser to effectively treat this gum disease. This treatment removes small infected portions of gum tissue, creates better access for cleaning or scaling the root surfaces and reduces the pocket depth. This method of treatment is invaluable in medically compromised patients who are not candidates for surgical therapy. Patients that are on medications that cause gingival overgrowth greatly benefit from laser therapy. Medications that commonly result in gingival overgrowth are often associated with hypertension or organ grafting. Generally the laser results in minimal, if any discomfort, no suturing and no bleeding, either during or following your appointment.

Case Studies

Patient reports with a medication induced hyperplasia of the gingival (overgrowth of the gum tissue). This excess tissue makes oral hygiene more difficult (e.g. plaque removal utilizing brushing and flossing).
A laser is utilized in a few short minutes to remove the excess gingiva. There is no bleeding associated with the laser therapy. No sutures (“stitches”) are necessary. The patient reports no pain or discomfort whatsoever and no need for any post-operative pain medications.
Patient reports back to office one week post laser therapy with healthy gingival levels, improved oral hygiene and no distinguishable alterations in gingival overgrowth from the medications she takes.

High school student reports to practice 2 weeks prior to senior prom having just removed orthodontic braces. Orthodontist reports inability to reduce gingival inflammation in one area. Gingiva in the esthetic zone around eye tooth of maxillary right side is severely inflamed.
Patient is given minimal dose of local anesthesia in cheek side of upper right eye tooth gum tissue; laser is gently passed over area one quick time!
Patient reports back to office the day before the prom with completely healthy gingiva, no inflammation and restored smile. Patient reports no bleeding at any time during or following procedure. Patient states there was no pain or discomfort whatsoever: “I didn't even have to take an aspirin. I went out with my boyfriend right after the appointment like I hadn't even been to the dentist!”.
