Don't Let Fear Prevent You From Addressing Your Gum Disease 07/12/2010
Dental Phobias are quite common. Some patients almost faint at the mere sight of the dental instruments we use for examinations. Forget about the reaction to surgical tools!
Whenever I have a patient that is terrified of dentists, I know that with a few pointed questions, I can determine the nature of the fear. Normally, it can be traced to a traumatic experience as a child. I’ve heard stories ranging from “the dentist kept falling asleep” to “my dentist was drunk” to “he did not numb me and extracted several teeth”.
Times have changed in dentistry. Techniques have been perfected, newer methods of sedation and patient comfort are available, and with proper medications, discomfort can be controlled and kept to a minimum.
We understand at South Florida Smile Restoration that some things will remain with us forever and sadly, a few bad apples give the rest of us a black eye; however, don’t let your fears overtake your common sense. Periodontal or gum disease progressively worsens. Left untreated, your silent mouth disease will one day rear its ugly head in the form of infection, loose and missing teeth due to bone loss that is caused by the disease, and more complicated surgeries to restore your mouth to its ideal condition.
